The UN Security Council gave the green light to a United States-backed measure to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his White House visit next week.
Sharaa was named provisional head of state following his leadership in a revolutionary movement that ousted Bashar al-Assad in the final month of 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of internal conflict.
America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that recognised Syria was in "a new era" following Assad's ouster.
Sharaa was under global penalties in his role as head of the religious organization the HTS movement, previously associated with the extremist organization. The US removed the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups this past July.
Additionally, the United Nations lifted restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Anas Khattab.
The nation's top diplomat expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the sanctions, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude to the United States and supportive states for backing the Syrian nation and citizens."
President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday comes after US President Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa demonstrated "substantial headway" towards bringing peace to the war-torn country.
Both presidents held discussions initially during May, when Trump visited Riyadh during a visit to Arab nations.
Following that encounter, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" with a "very strong past".
The HTS organization he led served as al-Qaeda's branch within Syria before he cut connections back in 2016.
Monday's visit is not the president's debut journey to the US during this period. During September, he became the initial Syrian president to address the United Nations gathering in New York after approximately sixty years.
In his speech, he declared the nation was "regaining its deserved status among the nations of the world" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.
