Chantelle Cameron voluntarily gave up her prestigious boxing title on recently as a form of protest against existing rules in women’s boxing, calling for the option to battle in longer rounds like male boxers.
Cameron’s decision to give up her title originates from her firm stance with the boxing governing body’s rule that women fight in shorter rounds, which the veteran boxer views as unfair standards.
“Women’s boxing has advanced significantly, but there’s still work to be done,” she announced. “I’ve always believed in fairness and that includes the choice to compete under equal conditions, the same chances, and identical regard.”
Cameron was upgraded to title holder when Katie Taylor was categorized “Champion in Recess” as she stepped away from the sport. The World Boxing Council was planning to hold a contract bid on recently for a fight between Cameron and other UK fighter her potential opponent.
In late 2023, another female fighter similarly gave up her WBC title after the governing body refused to allow her to fight in matches under the equivalent rules as fighters’ boxing, with longer duration fights.
The council head, the president, had stated previously that they would not approve extended rounds in female matches. “In tennis women play fewer sets, for basketball the basket is shorter and the ball is smaller and those are not contact sports. We stand by the health and protection of the boxers,” he wrote on social media.
Typically women’s championship matches have 10 rounds of reduced time each, and the fighter was among over twenty fighters – including Serrano – who started a movement in 2023 to have the option to participate under the identical regulations as male boxers.
Cameron, who boasts a impressive fight record, made clear that her stand extends beyond personal preference, presenting it as a fight for the next wave of women fighters. “It’s an honor of my success in becoming a title holder, but it’s right to protest for justice and for the sport’s development,” she concluded.
The fighter is not stepping away from professional fighting altogether, however, with her management team MVP saying she aims to chase different title chances and prestigious matches while continuing to demand on competing in longer duration fights.
