The English and Welsh Drawn Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in the same pool for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a major early encounter in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing recalls their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' surprise early exit.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

The Irish alongside Scotland also share a group once again, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland secured a 36-14 victory, with their opponents unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups cannot meet holders and world number one the Springboks until the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans win their own group.

Tournament Implications

If the groups conclude according to the current world rankings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from both the English and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will open the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster fixture designed to launch the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in France.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
