A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
