Seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
