Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a life-threatening collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals darted across the track directly in front of him
The concerning event happened on the third rotation when marshals were seen on the track as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to replace his damaged front wing
Moments later, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was witnessing"
"I rejoined with a brand new hard tyres, and then I got to Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes sprinting across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, frankly, it was so dangerous"
"Evidently there's been a communication breakdown somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We fail to grasp how on a ongoing race track safety personnel can be allowed to just dash across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"
The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the events
"Subsequent to a first corner event, track officials was informed that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" declared the governing body
"In the third rotation, marshals were alerted and placed on standby to enter the track and clear the fragments once all cars had passed"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy marshals were rescinded and a safety warning flag was raised in that area"
"The examination is ongoing what occurred subsequent to that time"
