Government Official States MoD Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Staff Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the possible threats posed by Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been advised to refrain from talking about classified information in any vehicles.

Safety Advice for MoD Staff

In a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD staff have been told not to discuss classified material while travelling in China-made vehicles.

He said that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however emphasised that safety is a concern in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those secret talks in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Defence Context

This revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

The broader security situation highlights the significance of strong measures and caution in all areas of government activities, from vehicle usage to discussions habits.
