Diving into an Bizarre Steam Demo: Playing as a Poop with the Goal to Reach the Toilet

Steam Next Fest is currently underway, and gamers have discovered plenty of interesting creations from small studios. But, one is particularly notable for its offbeat concept. Called Unko Technica, this retro-inspired side-scrolling game features a protagonist that is truly a turd striving to make its way to a commode. For those curious, "Unko" means "poop."

Player controls is simple: you only need a single jump button. Across numerous challenges, you'll face tough enemies and unlock a shop to buy outfits for your poop character.

Time your actions with caution, as a error requires restarting the level. Jump on floating orbs to hurl the poop upward, navigate disappearing platforms, and activate triggers to open secret routes. Gather UN-KOINS to purchase tougher stages where gameplay intensifies.

Visually, the experience shows off vibrant stages and a killer background music. The simple visual style featuring moving basic polygons may remind players of classic titles like Earthbound.

Even though tough to recall similar titles where you control a coiled turd, gaming often included fecal matter. For example, in Death Stranding, players craft throwables from character droppings. Games like Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved employ manure as soil enrichment. And of course, fecal references is present a lot in Obsidian's role-playing game The Stick of Truth.

Despite its silly idea, Unko Technica has already earned notable awards, like winning at a major publisher's indie contest in 2023. The demo is accessible at present on Steam, with the final release set to arrive on PC this November.
